Indonesia criminalizes sex outside marriage

by admin

In Indonesia, Parliament on Tuesday approved amendments to the law which, among other things, prohibit sex outside marriage, under penalty of up to one year in prison.

Members of the House of Representatives gave the green light to the bill in plenary session, despite strong criticism from opponents.

Human rights activists previously urged the House of Representatives not to pass the new rules, saying they violate civil rights in the world’s largest Muslim country.

The new legislation is expected to come into effect in 2025. On Monday, hundreds more people took to the streets in several Indonesian cities to protest the proposal. More protests are expected now that the law has been passed.
