Belgium rejects Russian annexation of Ukrainian territories

by admin

On Thursday, the Plenary House unanimously approved a resolution by N-VA MP Theo Francken rejecting the annexation of Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories.

Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed four occupied territories in eastern Ukraine in late September after people indicated in mock referendums organized by the Kremlin that they wanted to join Russia. These are Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia. With the resolution, the House rejects this annexation.

The text calls on the federal government to continue diplomatically treating the territories and their inhabitants as parts of Ukraine, and to disapprove of Russification in occupied territories, such as in Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula which was annexed by Russia in 2014 . .

The United Nations General Assembly condemned Russia’s illegal annexation earlier this month, after a similar text was rejected in the Security Council because permanent member Russia vetoed it. In the vote at the UN General Assembly, besides Russia, Belarus, Syria, North Korea and Nicaragua also voted against.
